Chennai – The Global City (Talent, Infrastructure and Policy)

What does Chennai require to promote itself as a global hub / city on technology front?

Chennai, often considered to be the gateway to southern India, is known for its robust economy, traditional culture, spectacular temple complexes, and a long coastline (not necessarily in that order!). The city was one of the early movers in tapping the potential of the technology sector in India. The IT and ITeS sectors took off in Chennai with the completion of TIDEL Park along the Rajiv Gandhi Salai (the erstwhile Old Mahabalipuram Road) in 2000. The efforts by the government to promote IT sector led to total available commercial office space in Chennai increasing at a CAGR of approximately 19% to reach more than 62.9 million sq. ft. in 2017. However, to further compete with the increasing competition the city requires an uplift in the following fronts. How do we improve the infrastructure connectivity? How do we promote available talent pool to the next level? What policy makers could do to attract global player? To know the answers join us for a lively debate between the renowned panelists.

Discussion Points:

  • How to attract investments and bring in fortune 500 companies/ start-ups to the city?
  • What ways could we improve the talent pool of TN to the city’s growth?
  • Is our infrastructure good enough to attract companies to set shop?
  • How policy interventions and effective implementation would act as a catalyst for growth?
  • How SEZ sunset clause is expected to impact the corporate expansion strategies?
  • Are we doing enough to promote the city in the global arena?
