The CoreNet Global India Conference returned to the Leela Palace, Bangalore for the 2nd consecutive year on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. Nearly 130 attendees gained knowledge through five exciting sessions, networked and received gifts and other materials from our sponsors – Embassy Office Parks, Commscope, Cushman & Wakefield, RMZ, Brigade Group, Purple Yo and Cresa. The event was supported by Associate Partner – The Property Times.

Following a welcome address by India Chapter Co-Chair – Sanjay Dutt, Cushman & Wakefiled and India Chapter Vice-Chair – Shamsher Singh Sindhu, Kotak Mahindra Bank, India’s celebrated author, commentator and thought leader – Gurcharan Das deliberated on India’s Urban Future. Overall, Das is optimistic. He feels that the Modi Government has been lucky thus far and knows how to push new ideas and initiatives such as Smart Cities. He also shared a small anecdote on how to select the right employee and through his story illustrated the point that it all came down to attitude. Following his speech, attendees lined up to receive a signed copy of his book – India Grows at Night: A Liberal Case for a Strong State.

The first panel discussion of the day was The Pain of Progress: Can Corporate Occupiers, Investors & Service Providers Combine to Help Improve Bangalore’s Crushing Traffic. George McKay, Colliers set the stage for the discussion in his introduction. Bangalore has certainly gained global recognition for becoming India’s version of the Silicon Valley. However, this incredible growth has also created major problems such as traffic thereby affecting employees commute to work. Panelists – Sanjay Dutt, Cushman & Wakefiled, Michael Holland, Embassy Office Parks and V Padmanabhan, Intuit all debated possible solutions but found that more organizations needed to come together and work on this. Solutions to Bangalore’s traffic woes could also be applied to other cities.

The speakers of the next panel discussion – Strategic Shifts – A Business Leader’s View of CRE – reflected on improving productivity levels and creating a workplace environment to encourage this. They also discussed different office set ups such as campuses, satellite offices and working from home and the advantages and disadvantages of each from the business perspective. Moderated by Praveen Vasudeva, Cisco, panelists included Jagvinder Mann, Microsoft, Giridhar Rajagopal, First American and Giridhar GV, Ernst and Young.

Moderated by Juggy Marwaha, JLL, the next panel looked at New Trends in CRE driven by E-Commerce. While panelists from the industry itself – Sanjay Baweja, Flipkart and Ram Narayanan, Ebay provided industry specific perspectives, Vishal Mirchandani, Brigade Enterprises shared his experience as a developer who worked with an E-commerce company – Amazon, to build their office space. All agreed that office spaces are now being designed and created as part of employee engagement and retention. Office locations too are very important and organizations tend to go where the talent is.

The final panel was on CRE & Technology – Vision of the Future. Here, speakers from Ericsson and Wipro shared their experiences on how technology is being used to change real estate operations. Services are being transformed with building information management systems and in the very near future we can expect to see more automation and robots in the workplace.

The day ended with a relaxing cocktail reception on the terrace where attendees were treated to a light drizzle and cool winds.
