President's Message
As the seasons change and we enter Q3 of our fiscal year, I reflect on our many accomplishments thus far. The leadership and committees have been busy planning events and programs designed to engage you, our members, in new and meaningful ways. In addition to sharing the highlights of the past many months, I am excited to share with you a few examples of what we all have to look forward to throughout the remainder of the year.
It gives me great pride to say that, to date, we have delivered a myriad of high value chapter programs including a summer series on Bay Area infrastructure and sustainability, and an in-depth look at the innovate new workplace approach at Genentech, a company that rarely opens its doors to outside organizations. We also produced an event called “Leveraging Your Online Presence” at LinkedIn, and a program on WELL building certification at Google. In addition to our monthly chapter meetings, Women of CoreNet held an innovative program called “Signature Leadership,” our Tech SIG (special interest group) hosted an extremely valuable program focused on data visualization tools, and our Young Leaders committee put on a forward-thinking program showcasing wearables in the workplace, which showed how wearable technology can be integrated into the design and management of space.
One of my favorite events was our VIP sponsor wine tasting and dinner, which was held in August at the beautiful Regalia Winery. As always, the evening was great fun and was a tremendous networking experience for our sponsors. I want to thank everyone who participated. Your energy and enthusiasm made the night one to remember. Additionally, I would like to invite anyone thinking about becoming a sponsor to check out our thriving sponsorship program. As we celebrated with our generous sponsors this summer, we also celebrated the tenth anniversary of our CoreNet Apprenticeship Program (CAP). This year, we hosted nine UC Berkeley students working in paid summer internships at CoreNet member companies. I want to personally thank the companies and individuals who sponsored and mentored these talented young men and women including CBRE, CRESA, Hamilton Zanze, Advent Software, JLL, McKesson, Visa and Wells Fargo. The 2015 CAP program was a tremendous success and included our second international internship with a student working at JLL in Hong Kong. CoreNet’s global magazine, The Leader also ran a feature article on our CAP program in their Sept/Oct issue. As a CAP sponsor, I was personally thrilled to see this amazing program recognized by our global organization and held up as an example for other chapters to follow. The Global Summit in Los Angeles in October was also a huge success. Our chapter was extremely well-represented with more than 240 attendees. I received overwhelmingly positive feedback from many members. Everyone seemed to agree that it was filled with the just the right mix of networking opportunities and learning and development experiences. Thank you to our creative and hard-working special events team for a truly fabulous Summit kickoff party featuring real American Idols!
So, what do we have up our sleeve for the fall and winter months? Of course, on November 19th, we will hold our much-anticipated signature event, the Annual CRE Awards Dinner. We have made some exciting changes to the format to keep things fresh as we celebrate this year’s Corporate Real Estate Executive of the Year, John Bruno, vice president global operations at Yahoo, and Corporate Real Estate Service Provider of the Year, Richard Pollack, CEO and founder of Pollack Consulting. I look forward to seeing you there and to toasting the outstanding careers of our esteemed honorees.
Additionally, I am thrilled to announce that we are piloting a new “Small Forum Series” for end-users that will focus on hot topics. On December 3rd, we will host our first small forum topic: “Why is San Francisco ‘The Place to Be’ for Growing Tech Companies?” Attendance will be capped at 18 to give those participating an intimate environment for lively and open discussion. Our December chapter meeting, entitled “Strategically Working for Success – The Right Way,” is a not-to-be-missed event. The program features Christine Spray, a nationally recognized business development keynote speaker and best-selling author. Given the importance of networking within CoreNet, I am so pleased to offer this relevant and useful content.
Lastly, in January we will ring in the New Year with both our annual holiday party and our annual Economic Forecast event. Information about these two events will come out shortly. Please watch for them and register right away!
In closing, I want to reiterate that our leadership and committees are responsible for everything we do. That group includes a large number of volunteers who work hard to connect and advance knowledge, promote personal excellence and add value for you, our members. I would like to personally invite you to join us in that effort by getting actively involved in our organization. Women of CoreNet - Save the Date!
Career Transitions – Navigating the Various Stages

The Northern California Chapter of Women of CoreNet February 2016 program features a workshop examining career / life path milestones with Dr. Marcia Reynolds, author of Wander Woman: How High-Achieving Women Find Contentment and Direction. Most women seriously reflect on the choices they have made on their career/life paths when transitioning into a new stage. They crave the need to realize their potential, but may feel angst when experiencing the passage of each of these stages. Therefore, the questions they ask themselves need to reflect the shift as their lives and career progress.
This workshop will look at what shifts for women over time as they ask the big question, “What makes my life valuable?” Our session will start with exploring what has changed for women that prompts them to feel restless and question their career/life decisions then move to exercises that will help the women clarify what they now want and why.
The program will feature an overview of the choices and needs typically present at each stage of a woman’s career, and then break into smaller groups to conduct progressive exercises for early, mid- and late-career phases.
Attendees will participate in three exercises, one for each career phase. The exercises are from Marcia’s book, Wander Woman, as well as programs she has successfully led with women all over the world. This workshop will help remove the fog as women look for the way forward, while providing a platform to explore future phases. A great gift for the busy professional.

Young Leaders
The Northern California Chapter Young Leaders Committee held a successful event on Thursday, June 25, titled “Wearables in the Workplace.” Hosted at Salesforce and moderated by Michelle Lagos from Cushman & Wakefield, the event featured Arnold Bautista (IA Interior Architects), Kris Herrera (Adobe), and Brett Blum (Accenture) speaking about how wearable technology is changing workplace design, strategy, and wellness.
Brett (Accenture) spoke about how wearables are beginning to disrupt a number of industries, and how they are helping Accenture to save money. Arnold (IA) discussed how they are using virtual reality to provide better experiences for their clients by providing better visualizations and reducing misunderstandings. Finally, Kris (Adobe) spoke about the Adobe Fitbit program and how the Wellness @ Adobe program is helping the company to save costs while improving the wellness of their employees.
