Over 120 People Attended CoreNet’s Friendsgiving Meetup

The CoreNet NYC Chapter saw its most successful Meetup yet when over 120 members and prospective members attended “Friendsgiving” at Bryant Park’s Celsius Bar. The next Meetup will take place in the New Year.


The Workshop Committee Hosted the Calatrava Hub Tour

On Tuesday, November 18, 2014 the Workshops committee hosted a construction tour of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. The combined presentation and tour sold out in three minutes and was led by Nick Houselog, Principal Property Manager at Port Authority of NY & NJ. Guests enjoyed an exclusive behind the scenes look at parts of the hub that are still under construction. The event was so well received that CoreNet will host a tour in the spring – look out for an invitation!


CoreNet NYC and its Sold Out Arianna Huffington Program!

On Wednesday, November 12, 2014, Arianna Huffington, the Chair, President and Editor-in-Chief of the Huffington Post Media Group and one of the most influential women in the world spoke to a sold out audience of CoreNet members and commercial real estate professionals. Huffington engaged the group in a discussion focused on health and wellness in a work climate where people are continually putting themselves at risk of occupational stress and burnout through over working. Huffington demonstrated how the workplace can have a significant influence on employee productivity and success. Using her own offices as an example, Huffington added that many professionals may still be hesitant of accepting innovative ideas. Huffington received a standing ovation following her speech after which she hosted a book signing for guests.

The Women’s SIG Committee and Kiss Your “BUT” Goodbye


On Thursday, October 23, 2014 the Women’s Special Interest Group hosted a special speaker event featuring Joe Azelby, Managing Director and CEO of JP Morgan Asset Management’s Global Real Asset Group and co-author of Kiss Your “But” Good-Bye: How To Get Beyond the One Word That Stands Between You and Success. Azelby highlighted simple and practical ways to overcome individual weakness to achieve the career and personal relationships you want. Following the presentation, guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, refreshments, and networking with industry colleagues.




CoreNet NYC Workshop Innovation Forum

Over 50 guests attended the first annual Innovation Forum hosted by the Workshop Committee of the NYC Chapter. This  expo-style event showcased interesting, innovative ideas and products in corporate real estate and workplace management today.  Speakers included industry representatives from big data, energy efficiency, sustainability, and the NYC New Local Legislation.



The New York City Chapter Hosted a Sponsor Appreciation Reception

On October 16, 2014, the Annual Sponsors of the New York Chapter of CoreNet Global were invited to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at Italian Wine Merchants. Thank you remarks for the Chapter sponsors were provided by Pay Wu, Chair of the NYC Chapter and Ted Moudis, AIA, Chair of the Sponsorship Committee.




Securing the Smart Building

The Technology Community of the NYC Chapter of CoreNet hosted a panel presentation on cyber security concerns and breaches titled Securing the Smart Building on Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The moderator for this panel discussion was James Whalen, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Boston Properties. The panel, which included Larry Borstein, Esq., Partner of Borstein Legal Group, Jesus Molina, Director of Nomeames Group and Marc Petock, Vice President of Marketing of Lynxspring discussed these concerns and remedied around the networked components of today’s modern “smart” building.




CoreNet NYC Chapter Meetup at Rare View Rooftop

On September 18, 2014, the CoreNet Chapter of NYC hosted its third Meetup event at Rare View Rooftop. Over 100 guests enjoyed breathtaking views of Midtown Manhattan, while networking with current and potential members.


The Art & Science of Mega Moves

Over 150 people attended CoreNet NYC Chapter’s Program – The Art & Science of Mega Moves, on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Grand Hyatt Manhattan Ballroom. The moderator for the program was Gagan Singh, Vice President of Goldman Sachs, an active CoreNet NYC Chapter member and volunteer. The panel, which included Michael Davidson, Managing Director of JP Morgan Chase, Bruce MacAffer, Senior Vice President of Group Real Estate Americas for WPP, and Keith Milone, Real Estate Portfolio Manager at Microsoft discussed key drivers behind major relocation initiatives and the critical role the CRE professional plays.




Olympic Medalist, Allison Wagner Led a Powerful Learning Session for Young Leaders

The Young Leaders of CoreNet joined together on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 for an Executive Leadership Coaching event led by Olympic Medalist, Allison Wagner. The event focused on identifying high-payoff activities, maximizing efficiency through performance, increasing influence and leadership and maintaining positive relationships.




CoreNet Global’s Discovery Forum Held at the Microsoft NYC Office

CoreNet Global held a Discovery Forum at Microsoft’s NYC office on Tuesday, September 9, 2014. Following the day long forum, the NYC Chapter hosted an informal reception for all attendees at the nearby Beer Authority.


CoreNet NYC Women’s SIG Mentoring Fall Program

The Women’s SIG of CoreNet NYC kicked off their Fall Mentorship Program at HLW on Thursday, September 4, 2014. Due to the success of the pilot program which debuted last fall, there are now four additional groups of mentors and mentees paired off, placing the final amount of groups to twelve.




CoreNet NYC Women’s SIG Annual Summer Networking Event

CoreNet NYC and AREW joined together in welcoming close to 100 individuals who attended CoreNet’s Annual Summer Networking event, on Thursday, August 21, 2014. Members and non- members alike joined in friendly conversation, while being served beverages and hors d’oeuvres on the Steelcase balcony overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park on a beautiful summer evening.





How to Select a Career Coach – And Why You Need One!

CoreNet NYC sponsors and members attended a free lunchtime event at DORMA Design Center’s showroom on Wednesday, August 20, 2014. The event, titled ‘How to Select a Career Coach – And Why You Need One!’ was joint-hosted by the Membership and Workshop Committees. The moderator for the panel was Pierre Ratte of Pfizer, an active CoreNet NYC Chapter member. The panel discussed various tips and for successful career coach engagement and speakers included Marc Betesh of KBA Lease Services, Steve Felix of Felix/ Weiner Consulting, Nina Fiddian – Green of Five O’Clock Club, and Gabriella Jordan of Handel Group.


CoreNet NYC Hosted its Annual Golf Outing in Purchase, New York

CoreNet NYC hosted its Annual Golf Outing on Monday, August 11, 2014 at Century and Old Oaks Country Clubs in Purchase, New York. Over 275 members and non- members joined the day’s festivities, enjoying golf, raffles, cocktail hour, and dinner complete with a silent auction and a $57,000 donation to the Salvadori Center.

The Impact of Evolving Social and Cultural Norms

On Tuesday, July 29, 2014 the Industry Special Interest Group (ISIG) held a by-invitation-only event for CoreNet end user members. Moderated by Andrew Garnar-Wortzel of Gensler, the panel discussed new ideas about sharing, transparency, diversity, choice and employee presence in the workforce today. Speakers for the panel included Sara Mailloux of Hulu, Rowen Ash of Twitter, Edward Ciffone of American Express, and Jonathan Fertel of SiteCompli.


A Walk in the Cloud

On Thursday, July 24, 2014, the Technology Community of the New York City Chapter hosted an evening of cocktails and networking with private tours of Sabey Data Centers Intergate.Manhattan building. An executive presentation that illustrated the technical attributes of the high-end, highly secure technical facility was also provided. CoreNet members were invited to bring their favorite corporate IT staff member free of charge to participate and experience the wonders of New York Citys only purpose-built data center as for a walk in the cloud.


‘When Communities Collide’ Summer Social

What happens when CoreNet communities collide? Fun times and great connections! Over 50 members gathered on July 10, 2014 for a summer social at Tavern on 51 at The New York Palace Hotel hosted by the New York City Chapter’s Strategy and Portfolio Planning (SPP), Sustainability and Technology Communities.

CoreNet NYC Young Leaders Tour of Google New York Office

Over 75 Young Leaders of the CoreNet NYC Chapter attended a guided tour of the NYC Google Office located at 111 8th Avenue on Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Google is the largest tenant in the building with 4,000 employees and they expect to occupy the entire building by 2039. The tour highlighted how real estate, design, and interior office environments impact the culture and future of work at Google.


CoreNet NYC Partners with IFMA NYC for Sustainability Event

On June 24, 2014, the New York City Chapters of CoreNet Global and International Facilities Management Association (IFMA) teamed up to produce a sustainability event titled, Energy Efficiency and the Future of the New York Grid. Moderated by CoreNet NYC’s Sustainability Community Vice Chair, Hussain Ali-Kahn, the event featured speakers William Horan of New York City Department of Education, Dave Popisil of Con Edison, Neil Rosen of North Short LIJ Health System, and Russell Unger of the Urban Green Council. The event was held at the Open Society Foundation and over 100 CoreNet and IFMA members were in attendance.


CoreNet NYC Members Gathered at 1 World Trade Center for the 2014 Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Reception

Over 150 CoreNet NYC Chapter members gathered at 1 World Trade Center on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 for a “State of the Chapter” Annual Meeting and Volunteer Appreciation Reception. Speakers for the Annual Meeting included Angela Cain, CEO of CoreNet Global; Pay Wu, Chair of CoreNet NYC; and Lou D’Avanzo, President of CoreNet NYC. Following the Annual Meeting, Dan Fishbein, Vice President of CoreNet NYC, presented the Chapter CRE nominees and announced Michael Davidson as CRE of the Year. Lauren Nanna, Secretary of CoreNet NYC, spoke on behalf of the Committee Chairs and presented the Committee Volunteer Star winners. After the presentations, guests were invited to the north side of 1 World Trade Center for the Volunteer Appreciation Reception, where they enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and refreshments while taking in stunning views of New York City.




The Women’s Special Interest Group of CoreNet NYC Enjoyed an Evening of Networking at Central Park’s Tavern on the Green

CoreNet NYC Women’s Special Interest Group held their Annual Spring Networking Event on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the newly reopened Tavern on the Green in Central Park. Over 95 people enjoyed refreshments and conversation with senior real estate professionals from major corporations. This event was featured in the Commercial Observer’s June 4th print edition.

Over 130 guests attended CoreNet NYC Program “Is Transformation the New Normal” held at the Sheraton New York on Thursday, May 8, 2014. In a dynamic panel discussion, CoreNet NYC explored how significant business decisions are being made with increasing speed and velocity, including business transformation activities such as merger integration and business divestiture, resulting in a continuously changing business landscape. Panelists took a look at how corporate real estate executives must respond to this “New Normal” by reorganizing and reinventing assets to accommodate these ever-changing business objectives and strategies.

Peter Miscovich, Managing Director of Corporate Solutions at Jones Lang LaSalle moderated the panel of which included Paul Begin P.E., Vice President of Global Real Estate and Facilities, Thomson Reuters; Deidre Buzzetto, Director, Global Real Estate, Lenovo; Mitra Meshgin-Poosh, Senior Vice President Global Real Estate Services, McGraw Hill Financial; Thomas Santiago, Senior Vice President of Global Real Estate, Time Warner Inc.



CoreNet NYC New Member Reception at Hearst Tower

CoreNet NYC Hosted its New Member Reception on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Hearst Tower. Lee Kosmac, Chair of the Membership Committee, provided the new members with an informative introduction to the Chapter. Following Lee’s presentation, Chapter Leadership and Committee Chairs mixed and mingled with the new members and welcomed them into the chapter.



CoreNet NYC Explores the Latest Innovations in Real Estate Mobile Technology

CoreNet NYC hosted a workshop entitled “BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): Real Estate Goes Mobile” on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Regus in New York City. This unique expo offered attendees with information regarding the latest in app technology.

Presenters, including Isiah Gaines, Regus; Mike Mathius, Captivator; Danny Mizrahi, Contango; David Mock, Honest Buildings and Alan Razak, Back of the Envelope/AthenianRazak, provided insights on the latest mobile devices, platforms and tools designed to keep corporate real estate professionals more productive and better informed. Answering questions about devices and his unique app, Mr. Mock noted “We are always building our network and reaching beyond its borders to find the best people.” All products represented are changing the way commercial real estate is bought, sold and managed and in turn, changing the landscape of the industry.

Women’s Special Interest Group Celebrated Protégés Mentorship Graduation

CoreNet NYC Women’s Special Interest Group (SIG) gathered on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 for their first Mentorship Graduation celebration. The program made its debut in June 2013 and was designed to increase the number of women leaders in the corporate real estate industry. The groups met on a monthly basis .The goals of the mentors were to help identify gaps in skills or experience as well as strengths in their protégés careers, provide support and guidance, share knowledge about developing a career path, help define expectations and outcomes and assist in developing professional goals and action plans. At this graduation program, the protégés received awards from their mentors, who consisted of senior- level female professionals with at least eight years experience in the commercial real estate industry.



CoreNet NYC Hosts Discussion On Impact Of New LEEDv4 System

CoreNet NYC’ Sustainability Community hosted “LEED v4 — Understanding the Newest Rating System” featuring speakers Niko Kienzl, Director at Atelier Ten, Junko Nakagawa, Associate at Atelier Ten and Jonce Walker, Programs Manager at Urban Green Council, on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Mohawk Group in New York City. Ms. Nakagawa and Mr. Kienzl, each environmental design consultants, outlined the latest approved version of the United States Green Building Council’s (USGBC’s) LEED v4, a certification system for buildings based on environmental standards for design and/or operation. The new system is effective now and becomes the required standard for LEED certification in June 2015 and will have a major impact on CoreNet NYC’s End-User membership, which controls over $2 billion in real estate in New York City. Additionally, Mr. Walker spoke on the philosophy and recent actions of Urban Green Council, the New York City Chapter of United States Green Building Council focused on sustainable development and green initiatives. The speakers focused on the latest system changes to LEED for New Construction, and how the modifications will affect all phases of building from design and development to construction and operation. Most notably, the LEED v4 system includes increased thresholds for energy and water use, waste production and indoor environmental quality, an increased focus on human health, encouragement of material transparency through product and ingredient declarations and a focus on integrative design practices and processes.

Over 800 Real Estate Industry Leaders Celebrate CoreNet NYC’s Receipt Of CoreNet Global Chapter Of The Year Award at the Annual Dinner

Over 800 members and guests—a record attendance for CoreNet NYC—gathered on the evening of Thursday, March 13, 2014 at American Museum of Natural History to celebrate CoreNet NYC’s receipt of the CoreNet Global Chapter of the Year Award and honor the ongoing contributions of its membership. Pay Wu, Chair of CoreNet NYC and Vice President of Global Business Services at American Express, welcome guests and provided an overview of the chapter’s accomplishments and key initiatives from the past year amidst the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. Guests enjoyed additional networking at the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life.





CoreNet NYC Hosts “Wellness In The Workplace” Workshop




CoreNet NYC hosted a workshop entitled, “Wellness in the Workplace” on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Steelcase. Steelcase Workplace Consultant, James Brewer, presented on the connection between wellness, physical space and organizational performance to over 35 CoreNet NYC members. Mr. Brewer noted, “The wealth of business depends on the health of workers,” explaining that companies spend an average of $0.20 on healthcare for every $1.00 earned, eight times more than the average amount spent on education and 830 times more than the average amount spent on energy conservation efforts.

Leading Women Executives Tell Their Success Stories at Women's SIG Event


CoreNet NYC hosted "Positioning for Success in an Unpredictable World" on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Skadden Arps. Ellen Albert, Executive Vice President at Viacom, moderated a panel of leading women executives that included Beth Barton, Facilities Engineer Senior Associate at the Federal Reserve Bank; Donna Clark, Senior Vice President at Time Inc.; and Barbara Rooney, Senior Business Leader at Mastercard.

During this sold-out event, panelists examined how to characterize professional success. Through a dynamic discussion, each of these industry veterans shared lessons-learned and best practices in carving a career path, helping define expectations and outcomes and developing professional goals and action plans. Offering insight on her unique path to success, Ms. Rooney stated “There is one thing you have to be mindful of in your career— to be strategic. Promote yourself; take credit for your accomplishments. Self promote.” Emphasizing the importance of mentorship, Ms. Clark advised “listen to the people who know you best.” Ms. Barton seconded this, explaining “there is a real support system that is real estate.”



Big Data and its Implications on Real Estate Development



CoreNet NYC hosted "Just How Big is 'Big' Data?" on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at AppNexus. Chris Zlocki, Executive Managing Director of Colliers International, moderated a panel that included Venkat Nagaswamy, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mimir Data, Andy Howells, Head of Workplace Consultancy of Condeco, and Ron Dembo, Founder and CEO of Zerofootprint Software.

Significance of Big Data for Commercial Real Estate Panelists explored how new analytics and technology are being used to understand behavior, improve operations, manage risk, support innovation and alter workplace strategy, and the implications that all of this has on the commercial real estate industry. Mr. Nagaswamy, Mr. Howells and Mr. Dembo developed the following findings:
 • Up to a third of a building's workspace is being underutilized each day.
 • Workspace occupancy measuring techniques and workspace utilization tools allow property managers to generate data sets, which are used to determine the effective use of buildings and resources.
 • Digital alerts can change tenant behavior in Class A office buildings.
 • Companies can utilize Big Data to streamline process, optimize output and maximize profit.
 • Big Data can predict who should sit where and when in the workplace.
 • Big Data will help forecast commercial real estate market trends and analytics.

This Year’s Sold-Out New Year’s Party: Largest Event To Date

 

 

 

CoreNet NYC hosted its Annual New Year’s Party on Thursday, January 9, 2014. This year’s event was held at the Mandarin Oriental in New York City, a larger venue that could accommodate the record attendance.

Over 250 CoreNet NYC members and guests from the corporate real estate industry gathered to celebrate the start of the New Year. While looking to the year ahead, the organization hopes to continue its momentum in 2014 after being recognized as the 2013 CoreNet Global Chapter of the Year.
