Challenging how humans live - the rise of the Megacity
In 2040, cities will need to house and provide workspace for massive and rapidly increasing populations, but against a backdrop of diminishing space. The solution? The Megacity. The Megacity will be a fully integrated conglomeration where we will live, work and play – an almost living thing – and will need to be designed, developed and managed in a whole new way. This session will illuminate the road to the Megacity.
What will be the likely shape, size and location of the megacity in 2040? What will happen to the non megacities? How will the megacities, hives of people and activity, prepare for the less predictable but ever-increasing threats such as terrorism, fuel shortages and cyber crime?
What about the buildings? Greater building density will require buildings to be more efficient and self-sufficient. In this session we argue that the world is not prepared for the huge metabolism of a megacity, in terms of energy, infrastructure and connectivity demands, and the resulting waste.
During the session we will explore and pose the questions:
• How will humans move around megacities?
• How will humans communicate with each other when living in such close proximity?
• How will we power the megacities and how will the power be shared and distributed?
• How will we deal with the increasing amounts of waste and meet the demands of the recent Climate Change Summit report?
The session will invite contributions from globally renowned experts on city infrastructure planning, power distribution, waste management and transport.
Above all, how can we make our cities livable? The answers will determine the quality of life for our children and theirs for generations to come.

The Pursuit of Workplace Happiness
Happiness is defined as a mental or emotional state of wellbeing defined by positive or pleasant emotions. But how often can we reflect after a day in the office and say that we experienced more positive than negative emotions? And why is it that we are so accepting of this and quietly return to the workplace every day without a complaint, yet we immediately complain if we stay in a hotel or visit a restaurant and have a bad experience? In this session, leading experts argue that employees of the future will demand evidence of how their happiness will be impacted or enhanced if working for an employer and give significant weighting to this before joining an organisation. Welcome to the war on talent part II.
For too long, employees have put happiness and potentially their health, to one side and ignored the fact that 5 days out of 7 they are experiencing negative emotions, which will no doubt have a long-term effect on mental and physical wellbeing. But to-date, employee happiness hasn’t been given as much weighting vs. other benefits such as pension or private health schemes by employers.
In this session, leading experts argue that employees of the future will demand evidence of how their happiness will be impacted or enhanced if working for an employer, and consider this at the point of applying for a job and throughout employment with loyalty set to dissipate if needs aren’t met.
CRE Executives already face the challenge of the war on talent, but is this war set to become more complex and volatile in the future? How can real estate realistically promote happiness and should the office look to emulate environments that are centred on the happiness of people such as spas, which somehow adopt and clients follow, the unwritten rule that individuals must shut off mentally from the outside world and relax as soon as they walk into the building?

Innovations by Collaboration - the future of modern business
Where once secrecy, confidentiality and concealment were the key to ensuring you remained ahead of the competition, the key fundamental for success for
all businesses in the future will be collaboration. Co-working together with colleagues, partners and competitors will be the ‘norm’. Open protocols mean that Ford will work with GM; Google with NASA; Uber with AirBnB and maybe even CBRE with JLL!! This will be the ‘norm’ for your business if you want to stay ahead of the competition!
Behind the idea of collaborating to innovate is the rise of the virtual space and virtual working. Organisations are increasingly adopting virtual technologies
to support collaborative working and innovation, especially for multi-sited projects and outsourced operations. These technologies are also giving rise to new behaviours and user experiences, and are also transforming the workplace and office space we know today. This session will explore what the future collaborative workplace will look like and what it is that persuades professionals to enter independent co-working spaces, such as Spaces by Regus, and what makes it the ‘norm’ to collaborate in such places?
This session will also feature an insight into how collaboration is being enacted with our armed forces. We are being joined by Major General Nicholas Welch, assistant chief of the general staff. He will outline some of the challenges of a reducing resource within a global context where demands continue to increase and how the future will see increased collaboration between Governments and their armed forces.
The third element will invite contributions from Preetam Heeramun, who is currently studying for a PhD at Reading University, who will talk about use of virtual technologies in the workplace to support collaborative innovation. We will also hear from Uber, who regularly use Spaces by Regus and claim they regularly collaborate with other tenants whilst in the space and with interesting results.

Chris Carter Keall, Oxford Properties
Major General Nick Welch, Assistant Chief of the General Staff

Hacks, Attacks and Threats: How to stay safe online in the future
- Do you ever surf the internet and suddenly feel anxious that your next mouse click could leave you exposed and at the mercy of hackers?
- Do you ever stop to consider exactly how much data is held on you and by whom?
- What if your details or those of your business have already been used by hackers?
Alarmingly, Islamic State is now seeking the ability to launch cyber attacks against the U.S. government and civilian targets in a potentially dangerous expansion of the terror group’s Internet campaign. Even more alarming is how all civilians, including you, could in the future be databased by terror groups and groups of individuals, by demographic, targeted online. Added to this is the fact that as technology develops, so does the risk to real estate, and CRE Executives need to quickly understand how buildings can support or expose organisations to cyber attacks.
This session will explore the current cyber-attack trends which have and will impact both your personal and business data and online activity. It will also debate whether organisations are dedicating enough time and attention to understand how to protect themselves, their businesses and their assets (buildings) from cyber attacks.
